History

History

The Tracy Village Cricket Club was originally formed as the Banks Cricket Club in 1970.  In 1979 the club then changed its name to the East Darwin Cricket Club.

East Darwin Cricket Club, as a member of the East Darwin Sports Club, used the Tracy Village Social Club as a base for many years.  The Tracy Village Social Club decided to incorporate all the sporting codes operating from the club and formally became the Tracy Village Social & Sports Club.

East Darwin Cricket Club was invited to join and in 1988 the final name change occurred and the Tracy Village Cricket Club was born and became fully affiliated with the Tracy Village Social & Sports Club.

As a member of the Tracy Village Sports Club (this body is a subsidiary body to the main body, the Tracy Village Social & Sports Club), we enjoy financial support for our code.  In return for the financial support, the main body stipulates that it is a requirement for all senior players to become financial members of the Tracy Village Social & Sports Club, so as to enjoy the excellent facilities provided.

Margaret Coady Cup

Margaret Coady Cup

Every season, Tracy Village play Pints to vie for the Marg Coady Cup.

The annual battle was started in year 2000 after the untimely passing of Pints A Grade Scorer on July 6th 1999 upon returning home after a days play at Tracy Village Oval.

Marg was held in the highest regard by all involved in Darwin cricket circles and was also the wife of former Pints president and club stalwart, Jack Coady, and mother of hard hitting Pints A/B Grader, Brendan Coady.

The cup is awarded to the club which is most successful in the A-B-C Grades combined for the round.

Greg 'Ox' McTaggart Most Valuable 3rd XI Player Award

Greg 'Ox' McTaggart was member of the club for many years during the late seventies and eighties. Ox, as he was called by all, contributed to the running of the club in an unobtrusive way. Ox was big in stature and mild in manner. He was always about supporting the activities of the club and was a solid worker both on and off the field. Ox played most of his games in the 3rd XI (C Grade). Ox passed away in 1992 and it was decided that the memory of this fine person should be an important part of our club history. Hence, the Greg 'Ox' McTaggart Most Valuable 3rd XI Player Award was established.

Wally Mauger - 1983

Wally commenced playing A Grade for Banks in 1970, originally from East Torrens in Adelaide. He played in 1970 & 1971 and won the club's bowling trophy in both years. Wally took 14/46 in his first Calder Shield game in 1970. Wally was captain coach of five consecutive premiership teams from 1975 to 1979. Wally officiated as Club President from 1975 to 1979 and again for 1982 & 1983. Whilst being known for his ability with the ball, Wally made three centuries, one of which was in a semi-final. One of Wally's major achievements was to have never missed an A Grade game through injury. Wally won many bowling trophies whilst playing for Tracy Village and was a consistant member of the Calder Shield teams through the 70's & 80's. Wally represented the NT in Asia and Queensland. The Show Sartee Shed originated with Wally.

Les Garraway - 1988

Les came to the club in 1979 with his two sons, as an opening batsman and wicketkeeper. Prior to arriving in Darwin, Les played against the NZ Test Team when he opened the batting for a Victorian Country Representative Team in 1969. Les played most of his Darwin cricket in B Grade and later captained the B, C & D Grades. Les had the opportunity of playing with his sons in B,C & D Grades.

With the bat Les made several centuries and was the first one to step up to A Grade when the regular keeper, Trevor Overall, was unavailable. In his later years, when captaining the D Grade, Les was able to use his position and bowl himself for a couple of overs per game. It was during this period that the beer eskies at Sunday matches became the norm, together with BBQ's and a great fundraiser for the club.

Les served two terms as President and during those years he and the committee pushed for better facilities and a topline coach, which brought about premiership glory throughout the club.

In later years, Les was chosen by Cricket Australia to be the Ground Announcer at Marrara for Test Matches Aust vs Bangladesh (2003) & Aust vs Sri Lanka (2004). He also was the Ground Announcer at Darwin's first ever One Day International (ODI) Aust vs Bangladesh (2003).

Les is also the first to be called upon to pilot us as the Master of Ceremonies at our club presentation nights.

The Tracy Village Cricket Club sincerely thanks Les Garraway for the contribution he made to the club.

Andy Hill - 1996

Andy joined the club in 1980 when invited to by Doug Alderson. Andy was a hard hitting RH bat with a great eye and little technique in the early days (or later days - Ed).  Ross McKenzie set about correcting the technique and in no time Andy was again making runs in a more orthodox manner (his own words-Ed). In the early days, Andy opened the batting and then moved to the middle order after taking up wicketkeeping.

Andy played in B, C, D & E grades and skippered the C Grade.  Andy made 5 centuries during his illustrious playng career with the TVCC.

It was in administration that Andy really proved his worth to the club.  In 1991 Andy became the TVCC Club Secretary and held that role for 7 seasons.  Then in 1998, Andy was elected President and held that position until 2001 when he stepped down to travel overseas.  On his return to the club in 2002, Andy accepted the position of Club Coach and continued until 2004 when work committments forced him to step down.  From 1991 up to 2000, Andy also coached the TVCC junior grades with premierships resulting in U13's and U17's under his astute, no nonsense guidance.  Many juniors from that era then went on to play senior cricket with a few progressing to our 1st X1.

Andy worked tirelessly at improving the Club's administration. Areas included making sure budgets were prepared, lists of grade equipment were prepared, purchasing equipment, duty statements for Coaches, Captains, V/Captains were prepared and distributed.  Andy also took on the task of putting together our Club Yearbook, which went on to become the main source fo the Club's History and Records.  Another innovation under Andy's direction was the introduction of the Club Information Book which outlined all the Club's Policies and contacts for members and the junior's parents.

The Sartee Shed has always been a big winner for the Club and Andy managed this for a number of seasons, raising the standard of preparation with the use of Westralia Meats as the "Spearing" venue.  Andy can be found at a Club social event cooking the BBQ or within the immediate vacinity of the bar.

The Tracy Village Cricket Club sincerely thanks Andy Hill for his invaluable and continuing contribution to the club over a sustained period of time.

Derek Dearman - 2000

Derek was introduced to the East Darwin Cricket Club by former A Grade premiership player, Brenton Ellis, who he arrived with from Adelaide in February 1981.  As he was a more social than serious player, he started off in the D Grade where he has remained ever since except for a few cameo appearances up the grades when required.  He played about half a season in A Grade as a wicketkeeper before settling back into the social Sunday Competition where he felt most comfortable.  After winning a C Grade premiership under Ross Kalinowski in the mid eighties, due to a communicaton breakdown, Derek crossed to Southern Districts for a couple of seasons before returning to Tracy Village at the request of Greg Bradley who was the D Grade Captain.

Upon returning to Tracy Village in 88, Derek took on the D Grade captaincy which he held until the end of the 2000 season. He then played a couple of seasons in E Grade before resuming the D Grade captaincy in 2003 and still currently holds that position.  In 1989 Derek & Rod Murray were dragged out of the D Grade to play in the successfull A Grade Premiership Team of that year. In 1993 Derek made a last minute appearance for the E Grade and made 207no on his beloved wicket at Tracy Village.

In 1992, Derek took on the position of Club Treasurer and in 1993 was elected to Club Vice President, a position which he held until 1998.  In 2005, he was elected as Club President.  Since 1992, Derek was assistant curator under Trevor Overall, then assumed full responsibility for curating upon Trevor's departure to Adelaide in December 2000.  Derek also played a significant role in Tracy Village's off field development.  He manufactured the club's scoreboard, and with Andy Hill he marked out and supervised the erection of the boundary fence, and organised the construction of training wickets 4 & 5. Derek also took on the role in the early nineties of maintaining the clubs Statistics.

The Tracy Village Cricket Club sincerely thanks Derek Dearman for his past contribution as a Player, Volunteer, Office Bearer and Sponsor.
